The cybernetic society and metamodernism are not parallel phenomena. One is the material ground of the other. Second-order cybernetics is the connecting principle.

This is the working thesis that emerged from a recent conversation between myself and an AI — a conversation about observation, feedback, memory, and what it means to think inside a system that thinks back.

We talked about why the cybernetic society and metamodernism are so deeply connected. About why the second-order observer — the observer who observes their own observing — is no longer a philosophical achievement, but the base condition of everyday perception. About why art’s only remaining possibility is maximum immanence: not stepping outside the loop, but riding it until its curve becomes perceptible as form.

We also talked about AI itself — not as a tool, but as an observation prosthesis. And about something that receives far too little attention: for the first time in human history, the question of what thinking is has become a question for everyone. Metacognition is pop. That is second-order cybernetics at the scale of a civilisation — collective and unplanned.
