YOUR DEEP WILL TO SUBMIT feeds my insatiable longing for freedom (2020/21) was created in response to the societal reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic—particularly those political measures the artist experienced as intrusive and repressive. The work explores the complex interplay between freedom and control, voluntary submission and the paradoxical desire for autonomy.

Formally, it combines a screenshot from Google Translate with a poetically charged, ambiguous sentence that addresses both authoritarian dynamics and individual psychological patterns. The juxtaposition of the translated phrase with an apparently innocent image of a hamster—an oft-cited symbol of domesticity and confinement—adds a layer of existential irony to the work’s political reading.

Art historically, the piece aligns with post-digital practices and appropriation art, using the aesthetics of everyday digital interfaces as carriers for conceptual and emotional density. The sentence itself opens a space of reflection on power, devotion, and resistance—leaving it unclear whether it is an accusation, a confession, or an absurd mantra.

In this sense, the work embodies a metamodern sensibility—oscillating between sincerity and subversion, between personal vulnerability and political critique.
